Disability Rights Ohio offering Election Day phone line

Disability Rights Ohio is offering a phone line for Ohioans to call with questions about election day.

The hotline (800) 282-9181 will be open May 2 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today. Callers can also use Disability Rights Ohio’s intake line at 614-466-7264.

Executive Director Kerstin Sjoberg said the organization has offered the phone line for decades, but thought it was important to offer now because of recent changes.

“Ohio changed its voting identification requirements at the end of last year,” she said. “Before you were able to use something that had your name and address, such as a utility bill, but that’s not allowed.”

The accepted forms of identification are an unexpired Ohio driver’s license, a state-issued ID, a U.S. passport or a military-issued ID.

Sjoberg said Disability Rights Ohio recieves a variety of questions related to the voting process, such as transportation availability, voting precinct locations and curbside voting.

“Curbside voting is not widely advertised, it depends on the local Board of Elections how publicized it is. There’s no statewide guidelines regarding it,” Sjoberg said.

According to the Disability Rights Ohio website, “At any location that is exempt from accessibility requirements, curbside voting must be offered to people with disabilities who are unable to enter the polling location.”

Sjoberg said the organization helps people with disabilities overcome barriers to voting, such as obtaining transportation, securing proper identification and ensuring voting location accessibility.
